What you do is pick up a small or thick set of hair strands and apply a color which is a couple of shades lighter than your natural color. The highlights should match the color of your hair be it natural or artificial. The maximum you may lighten is up to three shades.

Apply the hair color only two days after shampooing your hair using a clarifying shampoo.

Do not shampoo your hair on the big day of hair coloring.

Check the expiration date on the product and make sure it is good to use. Use the color mixture as soon as you make it.

Do not use the brush which comes with the hair color. Buy half inch and quarter inch acrylic brushes which are available at common art supply stores. These brushes give you better control in applying the color and gives natural looking hair and is usually used by artists.

Get some latex gloves which fit your hands perfectly. The regular gloves you find in super markets never fit very well.

Apply the hair color from the back of your head to the front. This way you can avoid messing up the hair on your front when you try to reach the back over the painted front hair.

Hair Highlights should be done on the top layer of your hair only. This will give more depth to your hair and a sun kissed look which results in giving a really natural look.
